CTM Festival: Sounds and Styles From the Global Cutting Edge
# CTM Festival: Sounds and Styles From the Global Cutting Edge This past Sunday, [CTM Festival][1]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="CTM Festival (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"} drew to a close, marking another year of importing adventurous and outré club music from all around the world into Berlin's hallowed venues. Inviting such acts as the Brazilian band and political provocateurs [Teto Preto][2]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Teto Preto (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}, French multidimensional producer [BORA][3]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="BORA (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}, and Ugandan [Nyege Nyege][4]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Nyege Nyege (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"} affiliate and cross-genre DJ [Hibotep][5]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Hibotep (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}, the week-long event was both an exploration of the global cutting edge and the city's diverse taste in all aspects of the arts.  This year's festival theme, 'Liminality,' threw the spotlight on spiritual and social rituals, as well as "aesthetic, psychedelic, and other transformative experiences." For Electronic Beats' revamped festival coverage, we were interested specifically in these social and aesthetic facets, and the ways in which individuals within subcultural circles organize themselves through both sound and style. Overarching themes, as seen in the images below, include the intersections between human and machine, bondage and liberation, as well as spectator and spectacle. Combining images from French fashion photographer [Antoine De Almeida][6]{: target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Antoine De Almeida (opens in a new tab)"}, who snapped festival-goers outside shows, with selects by CTM's official photographers, who captured artists in the thralls of their performance, the following series provides a holistic view into underground culture as we know it.  [1]: https://www.ctm-festival.de/news/ [2]: https://www.instagram.com/tetopretofisssial/?hl=en [3]: https://www.instagram.com/boramurmure/ [4]: https://www.nyegenyege.com/ [5]: https://www.instagram.com/hibotep/ [6]: https://www.instagram.com/antoine.dealmeida/?hl=en *Photos by [Antoine De Almeida][1]{: target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Antoine De Almeida (opens in a new tab)"}, [Udo Siegfriedt][2]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Udo Siegfriedt (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}, [Irma FS][3]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Irma FS (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}, and [Stefanie Kulisch][4]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Stefanie Kulisch (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}*. *CTM flyer graphic design by [VOJD][5]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="VOJD (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}.* *Additional graphic design by [Ekaterina Kachavina][6]{: rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Ekaterina Kachavina (opens in a new tab)" target="_blank"}*.
