# An Artificial Intelligence Made These 231 Fake DJ Names By Analyzing Hard Wax’s Web Shop Back in January, we published what may be the best list we can think of in recent memory: [Olle Holmberg][1]{: target="_blank" rel="noopener"}'s [list of the 718 most popular words used by Hard Wax to categorize the music in their shop][2]{: target="_blank" rel="noopener"}. Though seemingly humorous in intent, it offered a fascinating insight into the famously cryptic linguistic system used by the store. It was interesting to learn, for instance, that the term "crafty" has been used 647 times and that "big room" had been used 928 times. Now Holmberg is back with another equally brilliant Hard Wax analytics experiment. Holmberg trained an AI to learn from all of the artist names currently on the Hard Wax website in order to generate its own producer names. The result is this new list---available below---of 231names that are all surprisingly believable. Fascinated by these experiments, and also [his prior work that scraped the Berghain.de site to create a list of the DJs who've played the Berlin techno institution most often between the years of 2009 and 2017][3]{: target="_blank" rel="noopener"}, we asked him a few questions to find out more about what he's doing and why. \[EDIT: Holmberg has also now posted a second list with AI generated releases, we have embedded the list below. We must be flexible, adaptable and mobile. In preparing for the decades to come we must harden our bodies and minds, acquire skills in primitive living, permaculture, community, medicine and so on. But until the shit hits the fan it's probably wise to also play along with the primary narrative. Which currently I'd say is the impending automation of most human labor by AI type systems. It's like the industrial revolution all over again. You can either toil in the field with ox and plow, or you can build tractors. What I mean, is that by doing data scraping/analysis and AI type hobby projects like the Berghain Sets data, the Hardwax Common Words data and now this, I'm gradually equipping myself skill-wise for near-term survival. That the subject of the homework is electronic dance music is merely incidental to my own proximity to it. ***What kind of tools do you use for this?*** Shell scripting, Python, TensorFlow, Keras. What we think of as "dance music culture", is already a sort of "entity" that dictates the how, what, where and why of "dance music." The parameters that determine how the music is produced, marketed and consumed are actually very narrow. To formalize and automate these production and distribution patterns is almost trivial. At least as compared to musics with more human content (e.g. voice). Soon your average consumer will not be able to tell the difference between a human made product and the output of a neural network.
